This page feature our work (see document below) in class using comic strips as a vehicle for learning about punctuating dialogue and transforming dialogue in the comic strip genre to prose and the implications for this in terms of meaning and effect. We also explored ways to expand and vary the activity as well.
As Gramps and Grams read the Sunday Newspaper, Gramps had a thought. Suddenly, a news article echoed throughout the house from the television in the living room. Gramps paused and turned his hearing aid toward the sound. The articulate news anchor reported that they're adding a bunch of new words to the dictionary.
"I don't think folks should be allowed to add new words to the dictionary like that," huffed and puffed Gramps. "What if I just started making up my own dictionary words? What a bugapoot that would be!"
Grams shook her head questioningly and croaked "What on earth is a bugapoot?!"
Gramps smiled smugly, replying "Look it up in my dictionary."

Our Translation:
The library is dark and quiet.
A peaceful Frazz is scanning a shelf in the library, Caulfield approaches him and breaks the silence.
"What are you doing?" he questions Frazz.
"Looking up a quote," Frazz responds as he pulls a book from the shelf.
Caulfield looks at him questioningly.
"Why not just do an internet search?"
Unperturbed, Frazz tells Caulfield thoughtfully, "I like the way when I'm looking up one thing I stumble across other new things."
Caulfield knew exactly what he meant and became excited. "Oh, the internet is full of things to stumble across!" he exclaimed.
Frazz laughed to himself. "That's the other reason," he said in reply.
